On July 30, 2019, a container tagged 'diplomatic goods' was delivered to the National Assembly in Kenya, but to the surprise of all, it was found to be empty.

The container was supposed to contain laptops and projectors donated by the National People's Congress of China, which were offered by the Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee on April 13, 2019.

The Chinese embassy expressed shock over the incident, confirming that they had indeed donated the items to the National Assembly.

“Over the years the Chinese side has made friendly donations to Kenyan brothers and sisters, including medical apparatus, office equipment, food aid etc and they have all been delivered safe and sound,” the statement reads.

The embassy stated that they believe the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) will handle the matter professionally and recover the equipment.

As of the publication date of August 1, 2019, the DCI had reportedly launched investigations into the incident.
