On July 31, a court in Santa Fe handed down an 18-year jail term to former welterweight world boxing champion Carlos Baldomir for repeatedly sexually abusing his minor daughter.

The 48-year-old Argentine was arrested in 2016 after his ex-wife reported the abuse, which allegedly occurred between 2012 and 2014.

Three judges unanimously ruled for his conviction of “repeated sexual abuse of a minor”, with the sentence being made behind closed doors to protect the identity of the victim.

Prosecutors had hoped for a longer jail term, but will now have to accept the official ruling after more than 20 witnesses testified against the former boxer.

Baldomir had a successful boxing career, which peaked in 2006 when he defeated Zab Judah for the welterweight title, only to lose it to Floyd Mayweather in November of the same year.
