Published on August 1, 2019, a family in Kinangop, Nyandarua County, is nursing serious injuries after being attacked by a gang of six thugs.
Mr. Rufas Thiga, his wife Margaret Wambui, and brother Benson Kigo were targeted by the criminals who descended on their home in Ndunyu Njeri market, Kinangop constituency, shortly after mourners left the compound.
Mr. Thiga reported hearing people trying to break his gate at night, prompting him to try and escape through the back door.
"As I tried to escape through the back door, two men attacked me with machetes as others remained in the house where they descended on my wife Margaret Wambui using crude weapons," Mr. Thiga said.
The thugs then forced Mr. Thiga into the house and demanded the money contributed towards the burial of his sister, which he had set aside to buy a coffin.
"I gave them Sh18,000 that had been set aside to buy a coffin," Mr. Thiga said.
Ms. Wambui revealed that the criminals followed her to the bathroom where she was hiding and beat her up as they demanded money.
"They threatened to kill the entire family. I sustained injuries on the head, back, and hands," Ms. Wambui said.
Mr. Kigo, Mr. Thiga's brother, was also targeted by the thugs, who introduced themselves as police officers before hitting him on the head and ordering him to lie down.
"We have had many cases of livestock theft in the area, I thought they were livestock thieves. They introduced themselves as police officers before hitting me on the head and ordered me to lie down," Mr. Kigo said.
