On August 1, 2019, news of Joyce Laboso's passing shook the nation. But what many people may not know is that she had been battling cancer for an astonishing 28 years.
Her husband, Edwin Abonyo, revealed the details of her courageous fight in a memorial mass, where he shared the story of how Joyce was diagnosed with cancer in 1991, just two years after they got married.
"In 1991 is when Joyce got cancer, we had only two children back then and it was almost catastrophic," Abonyo said, recalling the devastating news that hit them at the time.
Despite the challenges they faced, Joyce refused to let her illness define her. She underwent radiotherapy and chemotherapy, but the treatment left her weakened and disabled.
However, Joyce's spirit remained unbroken. She continued to serve her community, often putting her duties as a governor ahead of her own health.
Abonyo recalled how Joyce would dedicate her life to serving humanity, even when she was struggling with her own health issues. "She served the voters even when we were in the bedroom she picked calls, replied messages and even sent money via M-Pesa," he said.
One of the most inspiring moments of Joyce's cancer journey was when she joined a marathon in Bomet county, despite being weak. She was ferried in a car to help her complete the race and inspire her people.
