On August 1, 2019, police in Nakuru launched a crackdown on a play station in the town, arresting 57 secondary school students who were smoking bhang and watching pornographic materials.
The students, who were from various schools in the region, were caught off guard by the police, who were backed by County Enforcement officers.
Nakuru Town East enforcement officer James Kinanga said his team received a tip-off from members of the public about suspicious activities within the premises.
"The culprits were headed to their respective homes after schools started closing for second term vacation. When we raided the building, we caught them dressed in uniforms while smoking bhang and watching pornographic materials," said Kinanga.
Eight operators of the play station, including two minors, were also arrested during the crackdown. The police recovered three laptops used for screening the inappropriate material.
Investigations have been launched to arraign the suspects in court, and they will be charged with operating an illegal business. The students who were caught will be released after notifying their respective schools and parents and will be taken for guidance and counseling sessions.
Nakuru County Director of Education Director Dr. William Sugut said his department was liaising with the Ministry of Interior to avert cases of students involving themselves in lawlessness and crime during holidays.
