On August 1, 2019, Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu walked out of the Industrial Area Remand Prison in Nairobi, after paying Sh15 million bail.
Waititu's release came a day after his wife, Susan Wangari, was freed from the Lang'ata Women's Prison, having paid her Sh4 million bond and surrendered her passport.
The couple, along with senior county government officials, had been charged over the Sh588 million irregular road tender.
Two directors of the company that won the tender to construct the roads have also been charged.
The case will be mentioned on August 26.
Waititu's return to power, following the takeover by his deputy James Nyoro, sets the stage for a renewed battle between the two former allies.
