On August 1, 2019, the Kenyan government announced new regulations for public service vehicles, requiring them to install new speed governors or face license withdrawal.
The Ministry of Interior and National Security, led by Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang'i, confirmed the new regulations, citing the need to reduce road accidents and improve vehicle tracking.
However, stakeholders in the transport sector, including vehicle body builders, matatu owners, and transit goods owners, have expressed concerns about the new regulations, citing inconsistent enforcement and the high cost of the new speed governors.
According to Dr. Matiang'i, the new speed governors will not only help reduce road accidents but also enable the tracking and monitoring of every vehicle on the road.
