As the 2022 general elections draw near, Kwale county is witnessing a dramatic shift in the governor's succession battle. Governor Salim Mvurya's decision to endorse his deputy, Fatuma Achani, has sent shockwaves through the political landscape.
Initially, many dismissed Achani as a political lightweight in the governor's succession battle. However, Mvurya's sustained marketing of his deputy has changed the narrative. Sources close to the governor say he has tactically retreated, allowing Achani to take the lead in handling county issues, including the launch of development projects.
According to Mvurya, Achani is the only person capable of continuing his legacy of development. He argues that most of his opponents are self-seekers who want to enrich themselves with county resources. Mvurya also claims that it is only fair for the Digo community, from whom Achani hails, to produce the next governor, given that they are the largest community in the county.
However, Mvurya's endorsement of Achani has not gone unchallenged. Lunga Lunga MP Khatib Mwashetani and Kinango MP Benjamin Tayari have teamed up to discredit Mvurya's candidate, linking Achani to misappropriation of funds meant for some projects. Achani has denied the allegations and claimed her life is in danger.
Former Transport Minister Chirau Mwakwere is also preparing to contest for the governorship, citing his financial muscle and popularity in the county. Mwakwere's decision to run has added to Mvurya's woes, as both Mwakwere and Achani are from the Digo community.
