On 8th February 2019, Telkom Kenya and Airtel Networks Limited signed a historic agreement to merge their operations, creating a more efficient and competitive business.
The joint venture aims to enhance distribution networks, invest in advanced technologies, and ultimately challenge Safaricom's market dominance.
As a result of the planned union, Telkom Kenya has decided to discontinue certain business segments, leading to the termination of over 575 employees, roughly half of its workforce.
According to Telkom, a one-month notice was issued on 31st July to affected workers, the Communications Workers Union, and County Labor Offices, as required by law.
CEO Mugo Kibati assured that the termination process will be conducted fairly and transparently, with a 30-day consultative period for staff to discuss the matter with the company.
Telkom Kenya joins a growing list of Kenyan companies that have laid off employees in recent months.
