The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has dealt a significant blow to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) by overturning its decision to replay the African Champions League final.
On Wednesday, CAS ruled that CAF's executive committee did not have jurisdiction to order a replay of the match, citing 'unsafe conditions' as the reason for the decision.
The original fixture was abandoned after Wydad Casablanca left the pitch following a disputed decision, and Esperance were awarded the trophy and winners' medals. However, the CAF executive committee later ordered a replay on neutral territory, which has now been annulled by CAS.
In a statement, CAS said it had referred the matter back to the African soccer body for the 'competent CAF authorities to review the incidents' and decide whether the match should be replayed or not.
