On August 1, 2019, Kenya's government announced plans to submit a proposal to the United Nations Security Council to designate al-Shabaab as a terrorist organization.
The move is part of a broader effort to combat extremist groups worldwide, according to Foreign Affairs PS Macharia Kamau.
Speaking in Nairobi after meeting with United Arab Emirates officials, Macharia emphasized the importance of global cooperation in tackling al-Shabaab.
"We will formally be submitting a request, seeking UAE's support in listing al-Shabaab under UN Resolution 1267. This is important to bring the global efforts in tackling the group," he said.
Al-Shabaab, which pledged allegiance to Al-Qaeda in 2010, has not been classified as a terrorist group by the UN despite previous efforts.
The group's designation as a terrorist organization has been opposed by the US and the UK in the past, citing concerns that Kenya would seek to be delisted from the Somalia-Eritrea sanctions regime.
