On August 1, 2019, Environment Chief Officer Muriithi Kiogora announced a new plan to revolutionize waste collection and disposal at the busy Wakulima Market in Nakuru.
The market had been plagued by poor health standards due to uncollected garbage, with traders and locals complaining about the issue for a long time.
According to Kiogora, the Environment ministry will be responsible for cleaning the market, while the Trade ministry will focus on other sectors.
He attributed the poor waste management measures to managerial challenges, but assured that the new plan would bring significant improvements.
“The plan brings on board new waste collectors and recyclers who will be tasked with the cleanliness of the market,” Kiogora said.
