Published on July 31, 2019, Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu's bid to secure bail has hit a snag. He will spend the night in remand prison after failing to meet the court-ordered cash bail or bond.
Waititu was released on a cash bail of Sh15 million or Sh30 million bond by Milimani Chief Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi, but he was unable to meet the deadline. As a result, he will be detained at Industrial Area remand prison overnight.
His wife, Susan Wangari, who was released on Sh4 million cash bail or Sh10 million bond, will be detained at Lang'ata Women's Prison. The couple had spent the last two days in police cells after presenting themselves to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Sunday following arrest orders issued by Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji last Friday.
Magistrate Mugambi also barred Governor Waititu and all accused Kiambu county government officials from accessing their offices until their cases are heard and determined. This means Kiambu Deputy Governor Dr. James Nyoro will be in charge of county operations in Waititu's absence.
