Published on July 31, 2019, a day when the world was increasingly connected, yet many of us struggled to disconnect from our screens. We spent hours mindlessly scrolling through social media, emails, and texts, when we could be engaging with the real world.

However, it's impractical to imagine living without electronics, which have become an integral part of our daily lives. But, we can find ways to use our devices more mindfully and avoid wasting time on non-essential activities.

Here are three simple strategies to help you stay connected without the constant threat of digital interruption:

1. Set Boundaries

Instead of trying to quit cold turkey, set limits around your device use. Determine the times of the day when you can check your phone and stick to it. For example, you can check your phone first thing in the morning, but avoid it during your commute to work.

2. Embrace Manual Mode

Notifications can be a significant distraction. Turn off unnecessary notifications and opt to manually check your phone for new emails or messages. This will help you reduce distractions and interact with your devices at intervals that work for you.

Some devices also offer the option of turning your screen black and white, which can help reduce the allure of your phone or tablet.

3. Break Away

Give social media a break and set boundaries around your usage. Turn off notifications for all but the accounts that are essential for your career, and avoid posting overly personal information. This will help you avoid getting sucked into the vortex of social media and reduce your digital diet.
