A KDF soldier was arrested following an alleged incident in which he fired a gun at a man during a dispute over illegal changaa in Mumias, Kakamega County. The incident occurred in the Shitoto area, where tensions escalated between the soldier and a local resident.
According to police, the altercation involved Sospeter Makuba Mukabana and Leonard Akala, who were found drinking illicit liquor. The soldier, identified as a KDF member, reportedly shot the man twice before fleeing the scene. The victim was hospitalized with gunshot wounds, while the soldier remained in police custody as investigations continue.
Police Chief Peter Kattam confirmed the incident, stating the soldier had previously been involved in similar altercations. "The suspect fired two shots at the victim to intimidate him during the confrontation," Kattam said. "We have seized the firearm used and are conducting further inquiries."
The case highlights ongoing issues with illegal liquor trade in the region, which often leads to violent conflicts. Local authorities have reiterated their commitment to addressing such incidents through strict enforcement of laws against illicit alcohol production and consumption.
