Hussein Swaleh, a central figure in Kenya's 2004 Africa Cup of Nations campaign, died in the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crash on March 10, 2019. The former Kenya Football Federation (KFF) secretary general was returning home after serving as a CAF match official for the 2019 Caf Champions League final between Ismaily SC and TP Mazembe.
Swaleh's tenure as KFF secretary general from 2000 to 2004 coincided with Kenya's last AFCON appearance. Elected in 2001 alongside treasurer Mohammed Hatimy, he oversaw the team's historic 3-0 victory over Burkina Faso in Tunisia. His leadership ended abruptly when the KFF was dissolved in 2004 amid corruption allegations against chairman Maina Kariuki, leading to a FIFA ban that lasted two months before being lifted in August 2004.
The Federation of Kenya Football (FKF) issued a statement expressing condolences: "Football Kenya Federation wishes to express its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of FKF Lower Eastern branch chairman Hussein Swaleh and all victims of the #EthiopianAirlines Flight B-737-800Max that crashed today." CAF President Ahmad Ahmad also extended sympathies to Swaleh's family and the Kenyan football community.
Swaleh's influence extended beyond football. As a former Kirimari ward councilor in Embu County, he was set to discuss the Collo Super Cup Tournament with local officials. He also facilitated striker Dennis Oliech's first professional contract with Al-Arabi SC in Qatar.
Former Harambee Stars coach Jacob Mulee remembered Swaleh as a direct leader who prioritized football development. "He was a man who knew what he wanted for Kenyan football," Mulee said. "We lost a friend and mentor." Swaleh's legacy endures despite his death at 58.
