Dr. Stella Bosire, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's nominee for the health docket, withdrew from the vetting process on Monday, citing personal reasons and discomfort with the governor's leadership style.
The Nairobi County Assembly’s Committee on Appointments conducted final reviews of Sonko’s five cabinet nominees, but Bosire failed to submit required documentation or appear before the panel, according to committee chairman Chege Mwaura.
"She never presented her papers to the committee to be vetted, so we assumed she was not interested," Mwaura stated. Bosire had previously expressed reservations about working under Sonko’s leadership, a stance she reiterated in a public statement: "Unfortunately, it has come to that. I will serve Kenyans in other spaces."
Sonko appointed five officials in January 2019 to fill vacancies created by the abrupt resignation of education minister Janet Ouko and the dismissals of health chief Hitan Majevdia and devolution docket head Veska Kangogo. While the governor confirmed plans to nominate a replacement for the health role, he emphasized the process was "normal and they do happen."
The other nominees included Sanjeev Kaur Sonia Birdi for environment, Winfred Kathagu for economic planning, Pauline Kahiga Waititu for housing, and Lucia Mulwa for education.
