Kelvin Karanja of Kenya described the loss of five family members in the Ethiopian Airlines flight ET302 crash near Bishoftu, Ethiopia, on March 10, 2019. The Boeing 737 crash claimed 157 lives, including 32 Kenyans, 18 Canadians, and passengers from multiple other nations.
Karanja's mother had been in Ethiopia for six months prior to the crash. She was traveling to reunite with her family in Kenya, where she had not seen her son or other relatives for years. The accident also took the lives of Karanja's sister and three children, leaving him with profound grief.
"It’s painful to know we will not be able to laugh, play, or talk with them," Karanja said, reflecting on the irreversible loss. The crash occurred as the plane traveled from Addis Ababa to Nairobi, marking one of the deadliest aviation disasters in recent African history.
The incident involved passengers from 33 countries. Investigations into the cause of the disaster continued in the aftermath. The Kenyan DAILY POST reported the tragedy in 2012.
