Standard Chartered Bank Kenya introduced a mobile digital banking platform on March 11, 2019, investing Sh83.4 million in its development. The service enables customers to open accounts, transact, save, invest, and manage financial assets remotely through a smartphone application. Key features include real-time account updates, card activation/deactivation, bill payments, cheque blocking, fixed deposit management, and domestic/international fund transfers.
Managing Director and CEO Kariuki Ngari emphasized the platform's role in meeting evolving consumer needs, stating, "Our clients can now access banking services without interrupting their daily activities, whether it's spending time with family, playing sports, or taking a break." The digital solution, available via Google Play and Apple Store, caters to both existing and new customers.
The initiative positions Kenya as the fifth African market for Standard Chartered to deploy a digital-only retail banking model, following Cote D'Ivoire, Ghana, Tanzania, and Uganda. Ngari highlighted the bank's commitment to technology-driven innovation, noting, "Digitalization transforms traditional banking to align with modern lifestyles." Strategic partnerships are planned to enhance the platform's lifestyle-focused offerings.
