Siaya Senator James Orengo has demanded that the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) probe allegations of Sh21 billion in misappropriated funds tied to the construction of Kimwarer and Arror dams in Elgeyo Marakwet County. The senator, also serving as Senate Minority Leader, accused Deputy President William Ruto of orchestrating the financial misconduct, claiming the funds were diverted before construction began.
Orengo highlighted inconsistencies between Ruto's statements and those of Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich as evidence of irregularities. While Ruto recently reduced the alleged missing amount from Sh21 billion to Sh7 billion, the senator argued this discrepancy underscores systemic corruption. He urged Ruto to cooperate with investigators, warning that without his involvement, public funds would remain at risk.
Ruto has consistently denied allegations of wrongdoing. The dispute centers on the dams' procurement process, with Orengo alleging senior Jubilee Party officials facilitated the financial misconduct. The case has intensified political tensions ahead of upcoming elections. The Kenyan DAILY POST reported this on March 11, 2019, with copyright dating to 2012.
