A 17-year-old mother and a 31-year-old woman have been detained in connection with the alleged abandonment of a one-month-old infant in Nairobi’s Mukuru Kwa Reuben dumpsite, according to police sources.
Arrest Details ¶
The suspects were taken into custody on Monday following reports of the infant’s discovery. The 31-year-old woman, identified as Jane Boyari, is accused of assisting the teenage mother in disposing of the child, though no formal charges have been filed yet.
Investigating officers confirmed the pair is under interrogation, though the specific police station holding them remains undisclosed. The case was registered at Mukuru Kwa Reuben Police Post under docket number OB No. 32/9/3/2019.
Governor’s Response ¶
Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko announced a Sh100,000 reward for information leading to the suspects’ arrest, citing the severity of the alleged crime. His Facebook post described the infant as being found with a rope around its neck, prompting immediate medical attention.
The baby was initially treated at Mukuru Kwa Reuben Maternity Hospital before being transferred to Mama Lucy Hospital for further care. Sonko condemned the act as "inhuman" and criticized the posting of graphic images, stating, "This kind of nonsense will not be tolerated in Nairobi." He expressed hope the mother would have sought help instead of abandoning the child.
Medical Condition ¶
According to the governor’s post, the infant was rescued by a Good Samaritan and showed signs of distress upon discovery. While no updates on the child’s current health have been released, Sonko urged public prayers for the baby’s survival.
