A study by Jumia Kenya reveals that despite the country's 83% mobile internet penetration, only 13 million of the 45 million users are active online, according to the Kenya Mobile White Paper 2019. The report highlights that high internet costs and smartphone prices remain key barriers, with Kenyans paying more for data than neighbors in Uganda and Tanzania.

Jumia Kenya Managing Director Sam Chappatte emphasized the need to reduce mobile internet costs, noting that smartphones serve as the primary gateway to online access. He also predicted that the proposed merger between Airtel Kenya and Telkom Kenya could lower prices by boosting competition.

Mobile internet infrastructure has expanded significantly, with 3G coverage rising from 67% in 2014 to 85% in 2017, while 4G now reaches over a third of the population. Smartphone affordability has improved, with average prices on Jumia dropping from Sh18,600 in 2014 to Sh8,600 in 2018.

The report underscores Kenya's mobile-first digital ecosystem, with 80% of Jumia transactions and 70% of payments occurring via mobile devices. Chappatte stated, "Companies need to optimize for mobile phone because Kenya is a mobile first country."
