Rwandan opposition figure Victoire Ingabire has demanded accountability following the death of her party’s spokesperson, Anselme Mutuyimana, whose body was discovered in the western Mahoko area on Sunday.
Witnesses reported seeing men in police uniforms in a red vehicle detaining Mutuyimana before his death, though the cause remains unconfirmed. Rwandan authorities stated they are investigating but have not identified suspects.
Mutuyimana’s elder brother, Augustin Tubanambazi, told Reuters the body showed no external wounds but had blood in the mouth. The 30-year-old’s death adds to concerns about political tensions in Rwanda, where opposition figures have faced unsolved deaths in recent years.
Rwandan President Paul Kagame, who has overseen economic growth since the 1994 genocide, faces ongoing criticism over alleged human rights abuses and suppression of dissent. Ingabire, who served a six-year sentence for inciting insurrection, cited the unresolved 2017 death of another party official, Jean Damascene Habarugira, as part of a pattern of unaddressed cases.
Previous high-profile deaths include Democratic Green Party vice president Andre Kagwa Rwisereka in 2010 and exiled intelligence chief Patrick Karegeya, murdered in Johannesburg in 2014.
