Cedric Galia Asiavugwa, a 32-year-old Kenyan law student, died in the Ethiopian Airlines flight ET302 crash shortly after takeoff from Addis Ababa's Bole International Airport. He was traveling from the United States to Kenya to attend his wife's funeral, according to family members.
The tragedy occurred as Asiavugwa, who had been studying law at Georgetown University, prepared to return to his home in Trans Nzoia. His family had been awaiting his arrival in Nairobi on Sunday, but the crash claimed his life along with 157 others.
Asiavugwa's maternal roots trace to Luzu village in Vihiga County, though his family later relocated to Mawe Tatu in Kitale. His sister, Beatrice Achitsa, described the loss as devastating, noting their efforts to process the grief. Their father, Govedi Asiavugwa, traveled to Nairobi following the crash to seek updates.
Friends and academic colleagues mourned his passing. A joint statement from Georgetown University highlighted his dedication to social justice, while acquaintances shared tributes on social media. Asiavugwa, the sixth of nine children, leaves behind his wife and a child.
His educational journey included studies at St Peter's Minor Seminary in Mukumu from 2001 to 2004, followed by theological training in Zimbabwe, Uganda, and Tanzania. He later shifted to law, with a sponsor covering his tuition at Georgetown University.
