A 17-year-old suspect has been arrested following the discovery of a newborn left at a Nairobi dumpsite, with authorities confirming the child was found bound by a rope in Mukuru kwa Reuben slums on March 11, 2019.

Governor Mike Sonko condemned the act, urging mothers to seek assistance rather than abandon infants. He revealed the baby, who was in critical condition, was transferred to Mama Lucy Hospital for treatment and called on citizens to pray for its recovery.

The governor announced a Ksh. 100,000 reward for information leading to the mother’s identification. A 31-year-old woman allegedly involved in the abandonment was also detained, with both facing arraignment in court.

Local authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the infant’s disposal, which occurred hours before the governor’s public statement on the incident.
