The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has confirmed it will continue its ban on Russian athletes due to doping violations, following a council meeting in Qatar. The decision hinges on unresolved matters related to data from the Moscow anti-doping laboratory and outstanding financial obligations linked to the 2015 scandal.
Rune Andersen, head of the IAAF's doping task force, highlighted two critical unresolved issues during a Doha press conference. He emphasized the need to address these matters before any reconsideration of the ban. Andersen also raised concerns about potential continued involvement of coaches from Russia's discredited athletics system, contradicting assurances provided by Russian authorities.
The IAAF suspended Russia in 2015 after revelations of a state-sponsored doping program. This marks the 10th time the organization has rejected Russia's appeals for reinstatement. While the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) and the International Olympic Committee have lifted some sanctions, the IAAF remains the last major sports body to restrict athletes from competing under the Russian flag.
Recent developments include the suspension of 12 additional Russian athletes in February, including high jumper Ivan Ukhov, who lost his 2012 Olympic gold medal. IAAF officials noted that Russian athletes could still compete in the 2019 World Championships if conditions are met, though no timeline was specified.
