Former Standard Media Group editor Tony Ngare was among the 157 victims of the Ethiopian Airlines flight that crashed on March 10, 2019, shortly after departing from Addis Ababa.
The Boeing 737-800MAX, bound for Nairobi, lost contact six minutes into its flight. Ethiopian Airlines confirmed the aircraft, registered as ET-AVJ, took off at 8:38 a.m. local time and disappeared from radar at 8:44 a.m.
"At this time, search and rescue operations are in progress and we have no confirmed information about survivors or any possible casualties," the airline stated.
Nyambura Ngare, the deceased's sister, posted an emotional tribute on social media, writing: "I don’t know life without you. I was born to be your little sister. You have protected and loved me all these years. What does tomorrow look like without you?" The message included a childhood photo of the siblings.
Colleagues and friends expressed condolences online. Comments included: "I want to wake up from a bad dream..." from Barbara Gagnon, and "Those we held in our arms for a short while we hold in our hearts forever, rest in peace," by Rufus Wamahiu. Kiss100.co.ke extended condolences to the family, stating, "Pole sana."
