Leadership tensions at Christian Church International have escalated into a potential legal dispute, with over 370 pastors, elders, and members accusing top officials of systemic violations of church governance. The conflict centers on allegations of nepotism, improper leadership, and age-related breaches of the church constitution.
Constitutional Allegations ¶
Reverend John Maina and other church leaders claim that Bishop John Kauti Mativo and Presiding Bishop Henry Zakayo Mulandi have repeatedly ignored established policies. The pastors allege that Mulandi, who is over 70 years old, was allowed to contest for a NEC position despite the church's rule limiting leadership roles to those under 65.
Accusations of Misconduct ¶
Mativo and Mulandi face charges of running the church as a private enterprise, splitting the Thika diocese without proper oversight, and failing to address member concerns. The pastors demand Mativo's immediate resignation and Mulandi's removal pending a constitutionally compliant election for a new presiding bishop.
"Bishop Mulandi, elected unconstitutionally and exceeding the retirement age, must step down until a new leader is chosen," stated Pastor Ayub Wahuga. The group also calls for the reversal of the Thika diocese dissolution and the return of its assets to church leadership.
