Uganda Scrutinizes Eskom's Power Generation Contract Amid Maintenance Concerns

Uganda's parliamentary Natural Resources Committee has raised concerns over Eskom's management of the Nalubaale and Kiira power stations, prompting a reevaluation of the South African utility's 20-year concession. The committee accused Eskom of prioritizing operations over maintenance, leading to deteriorating infrastructure and reduced generation capacity.

Eskom, which secured the 2003 concession to operate the 180MW Nalubaale and 200MW Kiira plants, has invested only $25 million of the $100 million pledged over 20 years. Despite plans to inject an additional $30 million over three years, officials questioned the timing and effectiveness of the funding. The committee found that critical maintenance, including major refurbishments required every seven to 10 years, has been neglected for 15 years.
