MTN Business Kenya has established a tier 3 disaster recovery facility in Nairobi and a secondary site in Mombasa as part of its 2019 infrastructure expansion. The Nairobi center required an investment of Sh1 billion, enabling enterprises to access cloud-based disaster recovery solutions through a pay-per-use model.

Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) allows organizations to replicate critical systems and data in offsite locations, ensuring rapid restoration after disruptions. This approach reduces reliance on costly in-house infrastructure, with businesses only paying for the capacity they utilize. The model aligns with growing demand for scalable IT resilience strategies.

A 2017 survey by Worldwide Wax, which analyzed 300 medium and large companies across Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa, found that 75% of Kenyan businesses highlighted improved efficiency and scalability as key benefits of cloud services. The report noted 69% of Kenyan firms experienced operational improvements, while 48% reported significant market share gains.

Industry experts emphasize defining recovery time objectives (RTO) and recovery point objectives (RPO) when designing disaster recovery plans. Key considerations include identifying mission-critical workloads, assessing budget constraints, and evaluating existing technology and resources.

Essential Questions for Developing a Data Recovery Strategy

  • What is the business impact of potential ICT disruptions?
  • Which critical systems require protection?
  • What technologies are currently in use?
  • What financial and human resources are available?
  • What are your recovery time and point objectives?

MTN offers presentations on its disaster recovery services upon request. Contact [email protected] for more information.
