Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) Chief Ezekiel Mutua has prohibited schoolchildren from accessing Diamond and Harmonize’s hit single ‘Kwangaru,’ citing concerns about its cultural impact.
The ban follows 11 months of the track’s release, with Mutua alleging the song’s lyrics undermine youth development and traditional values. ‘Dances and discos must be regulated to prevent foreign artistes from eroding our cultural heritage,’ he stated.
Mutua criticized the influence of international musicians, noting that students have adopted the song’s phrases in schools. ‘Children are singing lyrics that distort our cultural identity,’ he said during a Mombasa meeting. He also accused foreign performers of avoiding tax obligations by funneling revenues directly to their home countries.
‘These artists collaborate with local venues to bypass taxation, denying Kenya revenue,’ Mutua claimed. He emphasized stricter enforcement against acts deemed harmful to national culture, warning of consequences for those facilitating such activities.
