On July 31, 2019, a heated exchange erupted in the Nyandarua County Assembly after a nominated Member of County Assembly (MCA), Salome Muthoni, was ordered to leave the House for wearing jeans and a jumper.
Deputy Speaker Zackary Ndungu declared Muthoni a 'stranger' and requested her to vacate the House, citing the Speaker's rules which define the attire for legislators.
Majority Chief Whip Wangari Methu had moved a motion on county internship guidelines, and Muthoni had risen to contribute when Githioro MCA Sambigi Mukuria raised a point of order, questioning her attire.
The House thumped their feet in approval as Muthoni hastily left the assembly with her head bowed, while students from Mumui Secondary School, Kipipiri, who were on a tour, giggled at the scene.
