A Nairobi-based journalist has detailed his struggle with depression, including sleepless nights, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts, before seeking treatment at a rehabilitation center. The account highlights the emotional toll of mental health challenges and the support systems that helped him recover.

The Onset of Symptoms

The individual described initial symptoms of extreme fatigue, making mornings a daily struggle. He experienced a loss of motivation, irritability, and persistent anxiety, which led to social withdrawal. Sleep disturbances worsened the condition, with nights spent awake until dawn, plagued by nightmares.

Personal Tragedy and Realization

A friend’s failed suicide attempt in December 2018, coupled with his own deteriorating mental state, prompted the journalist to seek help. He admitted to self-medicating with alcohol, a decision he later regretted. His public Facebook post in October 2018, detailing his isolation and despair, sparked unexpected support from strangers.

Professional Intervention and Recovery

Referral to Dr. Nelly Kitazi led to a psychiatry treatment plan, culminating in admission to the Retreat Rehabilitation Centre in Limuru. There, he engaged in therapy, read extensively, and took on a leadership role within the facility. The journalist emphasized the importance of mental health advocacy, noting Kenya’s severe shortage of psychiatrists and psychiatric nurses.

Advocacy and Future Plans

Now advocating for mental health awareness, the journalist plans to launch a YouTube channel and speak at events. He credits his recovery to professional care, faith, and community support, while urging greater societal understanding of mental health issues.
