Kenyan actress Immaculate Murugi, recognized for her role as Ashley on Citizen TV’s Tahidi High, has shared insights into her career evolution and perspectives on the local entertainment industry. The 29-year-old, who began her journey in Mwea at age 19, sold utensils while building a company that now supports her professional endeavors.
Murugi, currently the New Generations Director at the Rotary Club of Lang’ata, disclosed seven personal revelations. She revealed that she adopted the stage name Ashley during high school, a choice that became permanent after she requested it for her Tahidi High character during auditions.
Her motivations stemmed from early life challenges, including relocating to upcountry during Class Seven and navigating cultural displacement. "I grew up with a single mother and a younger brother. I vowed to work hard so my mum could be comfortable," she explained, citing these experiences as her driving force.
After a training opportunity in Nairobi led her to stay in the city, Murugi established Solutions Media Productions, a branding and marketing firm. Her acting career began with a school drama competition, where she played a male role that earned regional recognition. She later joined Tahidi High as an extra before securing a leading role.
Reflecting on Kenya’s arts sector, Murugi highlighted bureaucratic obstacles and high taxes, contrasting local actors’ struggles with Nigeria’s more established industry. "Many young people are despairing because of the challenges," she noted, adding that some professionals avoid public transport due to perceived wealth.
Despite her success, she remains focused on mentoring youth, stating, "Kids are my biggest fans. They always stop me in the estate to say ‘Hi!’" When asked for advice to her 19-year-old self, she urged, "Don’t get involved in sponsorships. Focus on your life, work, and trust the process."
