The Kenyan government has confirmed it will not impose a ban on imported eggs and fish despite growing concerns from domestic producers. Trade and Industry Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya emphasized that while the ministry will not restrict imports, it will enforce quality control measures to protect local markets.
Local chicken farmers and fishermen have expressed frustration over the influx of inexpensive foreign products, particularly from Uganda and China. Munya acknowledged these challenges during a press briefing in Naivasha, where he outlined plans to address trade imbalances through partnerships with China and India to develop local industries.
"We are bound by international trade agreements that require open markets, but we remain committed to ensuring imported goods meet national standards," Munya stated. The remarks came during a workshop focused on advancing the Big Four agenda, a government initiative aimed at economic transformation.
