On July 31st, 2019, Telkom Kenya CEO Mugo Kibati sent an internal memo to staff informing them that the company had declared approximately 575 employees redundant due to the planned merger with Airtel Kenya.
According to the memo, the affected employees have been given a one-month notice, as required by Section 40 of the Employment Act, 2007.
Communication Workers Union Secretary General Benson Okwaro confirmed being aware of the retrenchment and stated that the union has scheduled talks with the management next week to discuss exit packages for the affected workers.
As part of the merger, Telkom Kenya and Airtel Kenya announced a partnership in February this year to merge their mobile, enterprise, and carrier services in Kenya through a Joint Venture Company called Airtel-Telkom.
Some of the redundant employees may be offered employment by Airtel-Telkom, subject to positions being available and meeting the recruitment criteria, as stated by Telkom CEO Mugo Kibati.
