The National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) has initiated payments to farmers for maize supplies, marking a positive step amid procurement challenges. The agency distributed Sh200 million on the first day of the program, with at least 400 farmers receiving payments as of late February 2019.
A verification process is underway to ensure only legitimate farmers who delivered maize to the board receive compensation. This screening aims to prevent fraudulent claims while addressing delays in the payment cycle.
Despite the progress, the NCPB has acquired just 12% of the two million bags required for the Strategic Food Reserve by early March 2019. The agency faces criticism for inadequate storage capacity, with reports indicating shortages of procurement bags that hinder maize absorption.
Industry observers urge accelerated payments and improved logistical planning to support farmers ahead of the upcoming planting season. The board has acknowledged the need to expand storage facilities to meet procurement targets.
