On July 31, 2019, the Dusit D2 hotel in Nairobi reopened its doors to the public, six and a half months after a devastating terror attack in January 2019 that claimed 21 lives.
The hotel's infrastructure was severely damaged during the attack, prompting the management to undertake extensive renovations.
Government officials, diplomats, and private sector representatives attended the reopening ceremony, which included a flag-raising ceremony to mark the occasion.
Thai Ambassador Cherdkiat Atthakor and Tourism CS Najib Balala officially received the flag at the Dusit D2 before handing it over to the Recce Squad for hoisting, as the national anthem was played.
As part of the reopening, six DusitD2 properties across the world, including Thailand, Bhutan, China, Egypt, and Dubai, hosted the Dusit D2 Nairobi flag to show support to the hotel during its closure and in memory of the six colleagues lost during the January 15 terror attack.
The government has assured investors and tourists that security has been beefed up, with Tourism CS Najib Balala stating that enhanced security measures have fueled the increased tourist arrivals in Kenya in recent months.
The Dusit D2 hotel team has vowed not to be cowed out of business by the terrorist attack, and guests were treated to a cocktail after the flag was hoisted.
