Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala called for urgent modernization of Kenya's hotel sector during the 53rd International Tourism Bourse in Berlin, held in March 2019. He emphasized that outdated excursions and accommodation models must align with contemporary travel trends to remain competitive.
Speaking at the event, Balala highlighted a recent Diani symposium focused on product development, stating, "The free independent traveler now books accommodation separately and seeks experiences elsewhere." He advocated for redefining accommodation categories to include bed-only, bed-and-breakfast, and full-board options that reflect changing consumer preferences.
Despite the push for innovation, Coast Tourism Working Group member Bobby Kamani urged the government to provide tax incentives for hotel upgrades. "Some hotels are taking the transformation seriously, but not all are prioritizing it," he said, stressing that tax savings should fund infrastructure improvements.
The Berlin bourse featured 42 Kenyan companies showcasing tourism products. PrideInn Group of Hotels founder Hasnain Noorani noted the event's role in fostering partnerships, while Balala reiterated its importance for benchmarking against global standards to enhance Kenya's tourism offerings.
