Urithi Housing Cooperative has pledged to finalize and deliver all ongoing housing projects within 12 months, with three key developments—Utange-Mombasa, Gem2, and Rongai Homes—expected to be completed in the next quarter for member handover.
The cooperative has delivered thousands of housing units over the past six years, including projects in Spring views Thika, Plainsview Juja, Gem1 Witeithie, and Nakuru/Juja Lanet homes. Chairman Samuel Maina attributed past delays to members' subscription payment challenges, prompting the cooperative to adopt new mobilization strategies to accelerate project delivery.
"The new strategies will address the housing backlog, ensuring no further delays," Maina stated. He highlighted the OTG project as a pioneering initiative aligning with President Uhuru Kenyatta's Big Four Agenda, particularly the affordable housing pillar. The government aims to construct 500,000 units annually through public-private partnerships, leveraging innovative methods and low-cost materials.
Maina emphasized that cooperatives like Urithi play a critical role in achieving the agenda, citing their member networks and operational structures. The OTG model relies on member contributions, with flexible payment plans spanning 12 to 48 months. "Speed depends on member funding, but we adapt to cash flow uncertainties," he explained. Pricing remains stable due to cost mitigation in labor, land, and materials, ensuring affordability without price adjustments.
