In 2019, 38 women from Kuria East, Migori County, received comprehensive cervical cancer treatment coverage through the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF), valued at Ksh 76.4 million. The three-year initiative, led by the Step by Step Cervical Cancer Campaign and supported by Smile Woman, includes chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and medication.
The program aims to assist over 7,000 women across Migori County, with the first phase focusing on Kuria East before expanding to Nyatike sub-county. Smile Woman Executive Director Thomas Chacha emphasized the importance of regular screenings and prompt medical attention for symptoms.
Dr. Nelly Bosire, an obstetrician-gynecologist, highlighted the financial challenges of treatment and urged communities to adopt safe sex practices to prevent human papilloma virus transmission, a primary cause of cervical cancer. The initiative marked a significant step in addressing healthcare access in the region.
