President Uhuru Kenyatta committed to fully funding all national sports teams participating in international events during a speech at the 4th Beyond Zero Half Marathon, emphasizing the economic role of sports, culture, and arts.
The president stated that the newly established Sports, Arts and Social Development Fund would ensure athletes receive necessary support, including uniforms, eliminating reliance on private sponsors. He specifically mentioned the Harambee Stars, national rugby, and netball teams as beneficiaries of the initiative.
Speaking to over 25,000 attendees, Kenyatta praised First Lady Margaret Kenyatta for her work in reducing maternal and child mortality through healthcare access programs. He noted the initiative had significantly lowered mortality rates, aligning with the government's zero mortality agenda.
The marathon, which featured former Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn and Deputy President William Ruto, saw Josephat Bett and Brilliant Kipkoech win the 21km races, each receiving Ksh 250,000. The First Lady highlighted that proceeds would fund policies promoting gender equality, child welfare, and elderly care.
She stated the event's inspiration stemmed from Kenya's high maternal mortality rates, with mobile clinics now operational in all 47 counties. The marathon also facilitated medical outreach to remote areas, according to the First Lady.
