President Uhuru Kenyatta received a new generation firearm license at State House on Friday, complying with a directive from Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i that mandates all private firearm holders to re-register by March 18.
"Today I received my new generation firearm license smart card and certificate from the Firearms Licensing Board after undergoing the due certification process and obtaining a unique identification number," Uhuru tweeted, confirming the renewal. The president surrendered his gun as part of the requirement to have firearms certified afresh under the new regulations.
Matiang’i announced that all gun owners must complete the re-registration process to receive a smart card containing a microchip with personal and firearm details. "When the police commander in the region requires you to produce this card because you own a firearm, you must do so," he stated, emphasizing the enforcement mechanism.
The policy requires holders to submit their weapons for verification and obtain a certified smart card by the March 18 deadline. The new system aims to enhance security and accountability in firearm ownership across Kenya.
