Five counties along Kenya's Coast have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a bulk water supply system, aiming to address persistent water scarcity. The Coast Water Services Board will oversee operations for Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Tana River, and Taita Taveta counties, managing 96% of regional water production.
During the agreement's signing at a Kwale hotel, Water and Sanitation Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui called the pact a 'game changer' for fostering collaboration between county governments and water agencies. The MoU includes advisory roles for the Water Services Regulatory Board and Water Services Authority, with a joint committee formed to facilitate implementation.
Chelugui emphasized the need for institutional reforms and investments to strengthen water provision in the region. He noted ongoing national projects focused on water security and climate resilience, with technical and financial support from the government.
