On Wednesday, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officials in Mombasa made a significant seizure at the port, impounding three vehicles that had been concealed as household goods and personal effects.
According to KRA Commissioner for Customs and Border Control Kevin Safari, the vehicles were declared as household goods and personal effects, but were actually suspected to be concealed vehicles.
Mr. Safari announced the incident on his Twitter handle, stating, 'A consignment of suspected concealed vehicles was nabbed at the port of Mombasa. The consignment was declared as household goods and personal effects.'
One suspect has been arrested and is assisting with investigations.
This is not the first time KRA has foiled a tax evasion attempt at the Mombasa Port. In July this year, the taxman intercepted a consignment of ethanol and a luxury car that had evaded Sh 12 million of tax.
On July 4, KRA had announced that it had nabbed 144 drums of imported ethanol as well as a high-end vehicle identified as a Range Rover Sport. The ethanol had been concealed as 1,000 bags of cement, while the Range Rover Sport had been concealed as second-hand window frames, doors, folding chairs, stools, and wall pictures.
It is worth noting that the Range Rover Sport was suspected to have been stolen from the United Kingdom.
