Speaking at a Nairobi hotel, Odinga emphasized his current role as African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development, stating, "I don't attend Jubilee Party meetings or Cabinet sessions. Any interference should occur within the African Union framework."
Building a Legacy ¶
Odinga addressed women's organizations commemorating the one-year anniversary of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), asserting the handshake aimed to unite Kenyans and create a shared legacy. "Both Uhuru and I seek legacy," he said. The initiative, he explained, emerged from concerns about national unity and ethnic tensions, with a focus on anti-corruption measures. "The Constitution must be amended," he added, criticizing elites for fueling ethnic divisions.
ODM leader Raila revealed the BBI was designed to prevent future violence and foster dialogue. "The country is bigger than our egos," he stated. Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, present at the event, praised Kenyatta's anti-corruption efforts, advocating for a "non-contested" referendum.
Political Tensions ¶
Siaya Senator James Orengo accused Deputy President William Ruto of undermining anti-corruption efforts, arguing Ruto should not operate independently from Kenyatta. "Ruto is a herdsboy, not a herdsman," Orengo declared. National Assembly Minority Leader John Mbadi also criticized Ruto for defending officials accused of graft, citing the Elgeyo Marakwet dam scandal as evidence of systemic issues.
