At least 15 individuals lost their lives following a violent shooting at a nightclub in central Mexico, according to prosecutors. The incident occurred in Salamanca, Guanajuato, where authorities are actively combating criminal networks engaged in fuel theft.
A spokesman for the public prosecutor's office, Juan Jose Martinez, confirmed to AFP that four additional people sustained injuries—three men and one woman—during the attack. The victims were transported to a nearby medical facility, though no identifications have been made publicly.
The assault unfolded in the early hours of Saturday at La Playa nightclub, where armed perpetrators opened fire before fleeing in a vehicle. The location is near the primary pipeline of state-owned oil company PEMEX, which has suffered significant financial losses due to fuel theft, estimated at $3 billion over recent years.
Recent tensions in the region include a January incident involving a fake bomb discovered near a refinery, alongside threats directed at President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. These messages demanded the withdrawal of military forces from the area, where operations against fuel theft cartels have intensified.
