Bomet East Member of Parliament Beatrice Kones disclosed that her son, Collins Kipyegon Kalya, took his own life after sending her a message while she was in South Africa attending the Pan-African Parliament.
Kipyegon, the third child of former minister Kipkalya Kones and Beatrice, died in Nakuru town last week. The MP recounted receiving a message from her son stating he was ending his life and asking her to care for his children. She emphasized that his death was unexpected, as he had no apparent material deficiencies.
Describing her son as a devoted driver, farming partner, and apolitical family member, Kones expressed sorrow over the rising youth suicide rates. She called for the establishment of counseling centers in every ward and urged professional counselors to engage with schools.
Deputy President William Ruto conveyed condolences through Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter, praising Kipyegon as a hardworking, independent-minded youth. Ruto highlighted the young man's aspirations to contribute to his family and community through agriculture, calling him a role model for rural youth.
Kipyegon left behind a widow, Miriam Chelangat, and three sons. His funeral was held at Kaporuso village in Bomet East Sub County, attended by Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso, former Governor Isaac Ruto, Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen, and multiple MPs.
