The incident involved a cargo plane en route from Montreal, Canada, to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, which diverted to Newark Liberty International Airport around 8:30 a.m. EST. Emergency responders evacuated passengers using slides as a precaution, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The airport confirmed two passengers sustained minor injuries unrelated to smoke exposure. No details about the fire's origin or cargo contents were immediately released.
