The fourth edition of the Beyond Zero Half Marathon will take place on Sunday at Nyayo National Stadium, with First Lady Margaret Kenyatta set to attend. The event, now in its 2019 iteration, aims to advance health initiatives for women, children, and people with disabilities through athletic participation.
This year's marathon includes a 21km elite race, 10km non-elite route, 5km children's race, and a corporate run. A new addition is a wheelchair race, marking the first time the event has accommodated disabled athletes. Organizers reported that 52 mobile clinics have been deployed nationwide since the race's inception, with over 20,000 participants expected this year.
The event will also serve as a pre-qualifier for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, featuring intellectually and visually impaired competitors. All races will start and finish at Nyayo Stadium, traversing Uhuru Highway and Bunyala Road. The marathon adheres to international standards for 21km and 10km road races.
During a pre-event training session, the First Lady stated, "We continue to move forward together to ensure the Beyond Zero health interventions reach more Kenyans." The event's organizers emphasized its role in promoting inclusivity and public health awareness.
